When Dreaming, Do as the Romans Do

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined.” – Henry David Thoreau

Another blogger and aspiring writer recently posted about the frustration of not living out your dreams. The frustration of not living the life you want and doing the things you love. I told her that she had already won half the battle, because she at least knew what she wanted. I then gave her tips on what she could do to pursue her dreams. Of course, it’s always easier said than done. I know this, because I saw myself in her post. I too know the frustration, fear, insecurity, disappointment, and anxiety that show up when we think of living our lives out loud.

I love lists. To-do lists, to-read lists, already-read lists, ideas lists, to-pay lists, to-see lists. You name it. Listing things makes obstacles seem surmountable, and reassures me that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. In the interest of moving forward and following my own dreams, I am going to make a new list. A dreams list. I am going to take stock of my dreams, list the steps it will take to achieve those dreams, and take concrete steps towards completing those tasks. Rome may not have been built in a day, but at least the Romans had a plan and stuck to it.
