Tape and Porta-Potties: A Lesson on Using What You’ve Got

“We will either find a way, or make one.” – Hannibal

Although the object in this picture looks like trash to most people, it is very special to me and makes me smile. As the saying goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” This treasure is a foot stool my grandmother made many years ago. She used a piece of ceiling panel as its base, the plastic pot from her portable toilet as its body, and a piece of wood as the top upon which to rest her feet. She bound these three things together with a few rolls of tape. Although my grandmother could not afford to buy a foot stool, she improvised. She used what she had to get by. She made a way out of no way. This footstool reminds me of her ingenuity. It reminds me to find a way or make a way.
